Total Number of Seats
The UGC-NET examination does not have a fixed number of seats for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or Assistant Professor positions. Instead, the number of available JRF slots is determined based on the total number of candidates who qualify in a given cycle. Specifically, only the top 6% of candidates who appear for both papers and meet the minimum qualifying marks are considered eligible for JRF.
These JRF slots are then distributed among various categories (such as General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) in accordance with the Government of India’s reservation policy.
For Assistant Professor eligibility, there is no cap on the number of qualifying candidates. Any candidate who meets the minimum qualifying criteria—40% aggregate marks for General category and 35% for reserved categories in both papers combined—is deemed eligible.
Therefore, while the number of JRF awards is limited and varies each year based on the pool of qualified candidates, the eligibility for Assistant Professor roles is open-ended, contingent upon meeting the prescribed qualifying marks.
